Broadway week is back again, and what better way to celebrate the husband’s birthday than a lovely show! I’ve wanted to watch this, ever since it took the stage in 2013. We booked tickets to Kinky Boots 15 days in advance but really didn’t know what to expect- would it measure up to previous shows on Broadway?
Needless to day, Kinky Boots has won six Tony awards including that for the best musical. The music score is by the lovely Cyndi Lauper- her first foray into Broadway as a songwriter.
The show plays at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, which was renamed and opened in November 2003, with the Broadway Musical Wonderful Town. The storyline for Kinky Boots is inspired by true events and by a British film by the same name released in 2005. The book for the musical is written by Harvey Fierstein. Set in Northampton , England, it tells the story of a young boy Charlie Price, who’s family owns a shoe factory, and the predicaments faced by him, once his father passes away. He meets drag queen (mind you- not a cross dresser or a transvestite- it’s insulting – if you watch the show you will know!) Lola, who helps him save the business.
Lola- played by Timothy Ware, was the star of the show- though I seriously wonder how he manages to do so much in high heels- I know I’d topple and land flat on my butt. The music of course kept me going- it was very Cyndi-style, and the tunes stuck in my head long after we were done.
All in all a great show. It’s not the Phantom- but given the minimal use of exorbitant costumes, I’d say that this would be the next big thing to watch out for- Time after Time!

I LOVED it. Saw it at the same theatre in March. I loved the duet between Charlie and Lola where they open up to each other about not meeting their fathers’ standards. Such a touching song and performance!

I didn’t know what to expect, but knew I had to experience it 🙂 And though I forget her name, the little quirky blonde girl who liked Charlie was SO Cyndi, I’m sure Cyndi herself helped coach her performance.

This show has FINALLY come to the UK this month. We are all thrilled it has “come home” – and it’s going down really well. Reviews have been rave and I ADORE the show. The West End really needed it!
