It’s that time of the year again, when the air gets crisper, the coats come off and the days get longer. We start exercising more- the weather is better and it uplifts our minds; Is this enough, or do we need to take specific actions to pay attention to our emotional health? It’s a question that has been on my mind for a while, especially after a few friends talked to me about depression and wondered how to overcome it. It’s a known fact that our psychological health affects us just as much as our physical health- which is why we need to make an effort to take care of our emotional selves.

10. Take time for self love- Stimulate yourself – This goes without saying.We have various ways of relaxing and stimulating our brains and this is where you have to make time to sit back. Soak in that tub like you have been meaning to, or sit on your couch with a great book. Listen to music, go create something, solve a crossword, cook if you like. I recently discovered that baking was therapeutic for me. Don’t want to do that? Try meditation- it helps.
9. Volunteer: You cannot even imagine how good this will make you feel. There is need for a pair of extra hands at various places and budgetary constraints. Give back a little and make a difference.
8. Sleep: The key to it all. Binge drinking and regular late nights end up with us cutting back on sleep. Your body and mind will thank you for a good nights rest. Have difficulty sleeping? Establish a bedtime routine, be it a warm bath, fresh sheets or reading a few pages from your favorite book.
7. Friends and Family: To talk to. We aren’t talking of fair weather friends here- but friends you can have a real conversation with. Meet family as much as possible, most are a gift from God. (If there’s some friction amongst family members- well then- check out the next point). Be intimate. Physical contact with loved ones helps- be it a hug, a kiss or regular sexual activity with your Significant Other.
6. Let go: Just breathe and let go of it all. No grudge is worth it. you’re letting the bitterness fester inside you- the other person may not even realize that you’re upset with him/her. Is it going to matter in 5 years? If not- let go. Forgive- you don’t have to forget.
5. Organize your day/yourself: Being organized brings peace of mind. People tend to work better if they have a plan- this leads to less stress. Don’t know where to start? Journal for 7 days- make a time sheet setting out everything you do and for the period of time you do it. Failing to do anything constructive on Facebook for more than an hour a day? You probably may need to start there.
4. Take control after rejection/failure: It’s human tendency that we feel sorry for ourselves after being rejected- thus damaging our own self worth. Yes, rejection hurts like physical pain. But remember that you’re good at something. Be Positive- it goes a long way towards making great future decisions. Failing makes our goals seem further away. Don’t let that get you down.Visualize where you want to be- what you want to be. Journal it or make a visualization board. Folks swear by it.
3.Maintaining our physical health and hygiene – This goes without saying- Our body is a temple of God and there’s no circumventing that. Let the endorphins flow after a great work out be it a walk, a dance session or yoga. Enjoy what you do. You don’t have to be skinny to be fit- you just have to love yourself. Same goes for hygiene- change your sheets, do laundry often, shower at least once a day, get that makeup off your face before you go to bed. Your 60 year old self will thank the younger you.
2. The Golden Rule– Learn to say No. Don’t over compensate or over promise when you know you can’t deliver. Not just in your professional life, but in your personal life too. Our minds are attuned to saying yes to our loved ones, especially when they need time. Remember- put yourself first you are important. Then prioritize and schedule time with loved ones- so also with important tasks.
1. Faith– The biggest and greatest of all. Talking to God helps so much. Reading my Bible is something that personally brings me peace and joy. I begin my day with listening to my favorite Radio Station online- WBGL. It uplifts me and kick starts my day.
